Solution
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances in a single phase
What are the two parts of a solution?
Solute and solvent
Define solute and give an example
The part of a solution that is being dissolved (usually the lesser amount). Ex. salt in a saltwater aquarium
Define solvent and give an example
The part of a solution that dissolves the solute (usually the greater amount). Ex. Water in a saltwater aquarium
Define saturated solution
A saturated solution contains the maximum quantity of solute that dissolves at that temperature OR dissolved material equal to the solubility value for that temperature
Define unsaturated solution and give an example
An unsaturated solution contains less than the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve at a particular temperature (measured by concentration). Ex. No solute is left on the bottom of the container
Define supersaturated solution
Supersaturated solutions contain more solute than is possible to be dissolved at that temperature OR containing more solute than the standard
What are the two ways to make a substance supersaturated?
Warm the solvent so that it will dissolve more, then cool the solution. Evaporate some of the solvent carefully so that the solute does not solidify and “come out of solution”
Define suspension
A cloudy mixture that separates spontaneously
Define alloy
A solid solution of metals
Define soluble
A solute that can dissolve in a particular solvent
Define insoluble
A solute that does not dissolve well in a particular solvent
Define miscible
Liquids or gases that will dissolve in each other
Define immiscible
Liquids or gases that will not dissolve in each other
Define concentration of solution
Amount of solute in a solution is given by its concentration measure with molarity
