Product
The answer when you multiply two or more numbers together.
Inverse Operations
Mathematical operations that undo each other, specifically Multiplication and Division.
Days in a month
30 days per month (30.436/month).
Days in a year
365 days per year (365.25/year).
Multiplication Diagrams (area models)
A picture that helps you break a big multiplication problem into smaller, easier parts by splitting numbers into tens and ones, multiplying inside smaller boxes, and adding all partial products together.
Standard Algorithm (Multiplication) Step 1
Estimate the result of the multiplication, such as rounding 1,287×365 to 1,000×400 to get 400,000.
Partial Products
The middle steps in the standard multiplication algorithm where you multiply the top number by the ones, tens, and hundreds places of the bottom number before adding them together.
Quotient
The answer to a division problem, which is placed above the division bracket starting at the place value determined by the initial estimate.
Standard Algorithm (Division) Steps
A repetitive process used to solve division problems consisting of: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, and Check.
Remainder
The amount left over at the end of a division problem that cannot be shared among groups, such as the 2 remaining in the problem 560÷18→31r2.
