Whole number
A number without fractions; an integer that is non-negative.
Integer
A whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero.
Ratio
A comparison of two quantities expressed as a fraction.
Percent
A ratio expressed as a fraction of 100.
Absolute value
The distance of a number from zero, regardless of direction.
Mixed number
A number consisting of an integer and a proper fraction.
Simplifying a fraction
The process of reducing the numerator and denominator to their smallest whole number values.
PEMDAS
An acronym for the order of operations: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).
Mode
The value that appears most frequently in a data set.
Median
The middle value in a data set when arranged in order.
Mean
The average of a set of numbers calculated by dividing the sum of all values by the number of values.
Rate
A ratio comparing two different units, such as speed (miles per hour).
Loan
Borrowed money that must be repaid with interest.
Grant
Financial aid that does not need to be repaid.
Exponent
A mathematical notation indicating the number of times a quantity is multiplied by itself.
Quadrant
One of the four regions of the Cartesian plane formed by the intersection of the x-axis and y-axis.
