Musculoskeletal System
The organ system that enables humans and other animals to move using the muscular and skeletal systems.
Skeletal System
Composed of 206 bones, it supports and protects the body, produces red blood cells, and stores essential minerals.
Synovial Joints
Freely movable joints where bones are separated and enclosed in a joint cavity filled with synovial fluid.
Articulation
The point at which two or more bones meet, also known as a joint.
Ligaments
Fibrous bands that provide support to joints by connecting bones.
Bursa
An enclosed sac filled with synovial fluid that reduces friction between moving tissues.
Range of Motion (ROM)
The degree of movement of a joint, can be assessed as active or passive.
Osteoporosis
A condition leading to decreased bone density and increased fracture risk, more common in older adults.
Arthritis
Inflammation of the joints, characterized by pain, stiffness, and swelling.
Developmental Dysplasia of Hip (DDH)
A condition that affects the hip joint in infants and young children, potentially leading to joint dislocation.
Anatomical landmarks
Specific points on the body used for identification and assessment during physical examinations.
Palpation
A technique where a healthcare provider feels with fingers to assess the body’s condition.
Axillary Nodes
Lymph nodes located in the armpits that drain lymphatic fluid from the upper limbs.
Gynecomastia
Abnormal enlargement of breast tissue in males, often occurring during puberty.
Self-care behaviours
Actions taken by individuals to maintain their health and well-being, such as exercise and monitoring diet.
Paget’s disease
A rare form of breast cancer, characterized by a rash or scaling of the nipple.
