What and where is the fovea centralis, and why is it important?
The fovea centralis is a small depression in the center of the macula lutea of the retina. It contains only cones and no rods, making it the area of sharpest vision and highest color discrimination.
Short essay:
Name two special senses whose receptor cells are replaced throughout life, and two special senses whose receptor cells are replaced so slowly that there can be no functional regeneration.
Replaced throughout life: Olfaction (smell) and Gustatory (taste).
Little to no regeneration: Vision (photoreceptors) and hearing (hair cells of cochlea).
Short essay:
Describe the function and the innervation of both the sphincter and dilator muscles of the pupil (in the iris of the eye).
Sphincter pupillae: Constricts the pupil; innervated by parasympathetic fibers (CN III).
Dilator pupillae: Dilates the pupil; innervated by sympathetic fibers.
