Monomial
A type of polynomial consisting of exactly one term, such as p5 or −9x4.
Binomial
A type of polynomial consisting of exactly two terms, such as 8x5−16.
Trinomial
A type of polynomial consisting of three terms, such as 3r3+2+8r5.
Standard Form
The arrangement of a polynomial's terms in descending order of their degree.
Degree of a Polynomial
The highest degree of any term within the polynomial; for instance, the degree of −5−s5+8s5t2 is 7.
Leading Coefficient
The coefficient of the first term of a polynomial when it is written in standard form.
Constant Term
A numerical term in a polynomial that does not have any variables attached, such as the number 2 in 3r3+2+8r5.
Like Terms
Monomials that have the same variables raised to the same powers, such as −9x4 and 10x4.
Non-Like Terms
Monomials that are not considered like terms because they have different variables or exponents, such as x5 and 6x7 or −3y and −3y2.
