The function of something, or what it does.
Gross Anatomy
What can be seen with the naked eye; also called macroscopic anatomy.
Microscopic Anatomy
Things that we look at with a microscope.
Cytology
The study of cells.
Histology
The study of tissues; tissues are groups of cells working together.
Surface Anatomy
What you can see on the very surface of the body.
Auscultation
Listening inside the body, usually through a stethoscope.
Percussion
Tapping on the body to hear particular sounds.
Palpation
Feeling the body.
Medical Imaging
Looking inside the body without surgery.
X-ray
A type of medical imaging using X-rays to show the densest structures best.
MRI
Magnetic Resonance Imaging; a type of medical imaging using magnets to see the soft and hard parts of the body.
Ultrasound
A type of medical imaging that produces an image called a sonogram.
Sonogram
The image produced by an ultrasound.
PET Scan
Positron Emission Tomography; a type of medical imaging used to look at function, often used to detect tumors.
Homeostasis
The way the body maintains a fairly constant internal environment.
