Mental health
The ability to be flexible, be successful, form close relationships, make appropriate judgments, solve problems, cope with daily stresses, and have a positive sense of self.
Mental illness
Threats to mental health including impaired ability to think, feel, or make sound judgments, difficulty coping with reality, and difficulty forming strong personal relationships.
DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-V)
A manual revised in 2013 used by psychiatrists and psychologists to determine criteria, suggest treatments, and provide codes used for fees for specific disorders.

The revision of the DSM V released in 2022.
Stress
An unavoidable condition, usually associated with the negative and seldom the positive, that is perceived differently by each person and produces anxiety.
Anxiety
An unpleasant feeling of tension, apprehension, a feeling of dread, or unexplained discomfort.
Levels of Anxiety
The four classified stages of anxiety: Mild, Moderate, Severe, and Panic.
Types of Anxiety Disorders
Classifications that include Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), Panic disorder, and Specific phobias.
Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD)
A disorder characterized by bodily symptoms that are distressing or significantly disrupt functioning, accompanied by excessive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors regarding those symptoms.
Conversion Disorder
Also known as Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder, it is a type of somatic symptom and related disorder.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
A response to an unexpected emotional or physical trauma that could not be controlled, characterized by recurring, intrusive, and disturbing memories.
Trauma and Stress or Related Disorders
The new category in the DSM-5 (2013) where Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is currently classified.
Criterion A (PTSD)
Exposure to an actual or potential death, life-threatening injury, or any type of sexual violence.
Criterion B (PTSD)
Reliving the traumatic occurrence through flashbacks, memories, or dreams, acting out, or reacting to episodes resembling the trauma for more than 1 month.
Criterion C (PTSD)
Avoiding anything that resembles the traumatic event for a duration lasting more than 1 month.
Criterion D (PTSD)
Noticeable change in mood and alteration in cognitive thinking starting or worsening after the incident, lasting more than 1 month.
Criterion F (PTSD)
The persistence of symptoms identified in criteria B, C, D, and E for a period lasting more than 1 month.
Criterion G (PTSD)
Impaired relationships with others, characterized by social withdrawal and a lack of trust.
Criterion H (PTSD)
The requirement that impaired relationships are not related to abusing drugs or to medical conditions.
CBT
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, a treatment modality used for both anxiety disorders and PTSD.
Brief eclectic psychotherapy
A specific treatment modality identified for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
CAM treatment for PTSD
Complementary and Alternative Medicine treatments including recreational therapy, animal-assisted therapy, and yoga.
