Over-emphaise on the visual
Tends to favour the visual and the monumental/ritual sites, neglecting the auditory, olfactory, and mundane aspects of daily life, particularly for lower-status groups.
The universal body
We cannot ever fully access the past as the body is not universal as sex, age, ability ect all vary
This is a key issue of Tilley’s work
Landscape change
Vegetation, geomorphology, seasonal conditions all differ for each person who walks the landscape
Phenomenology often neglects to account for how landscapes have changed
Subjectivity
Perception is always an act of interpretation shaped by one's cultural world and we cannot strip away our own cultural context
Thus results are difficult to reproduce, as another researcher might have a completely different experience in the same landscape.
Small scale
Can only be used in small sample sizes and means generated broader theories or conclusions is difficult
