Limitations

Over-emphaise on the visual

Tends to favour the visual and the monumental/ritual sites, neglecting the auditory, olfactory, and mundane aspects of daily life, particularly for lower-status groups.

The universal body

• We cannot ever fully access the past as the body is not universal as sex, age, ability ect all vary

• This is a key issue of Tilley’s work

Landscape change

• Vegetation, geomorphology, seasonal conditions all differ for each person who walks the landscape

• Phenomenology often neglects to account for how landscapes have changed

Subjectivity

• Perception is always an act of interpretation shaped by one's cultural world and we cannot strip away our own cultural context

• Thus results are difficult to reproduce, as another researcher might have a completely different experience in the same landscape.

Small scale

• Can only be used in small sample sizes and means generated broader theories or conclusions is difficult
