Hidden Curriculum

The background assumptions and expectations that run through the school system and the hidden messages students learn

Meritocracy

A society where jobs and pay are based on an individual’s talents and achievements rather than social status

Self-fulfilling Prophecy

When individuals become the label attached to them by others (especially in schools)

Hypersexual Culture

Where women are increasingly portrayed as sexual objects rather than people with intelligence, desires, and needs

Secularisattion

The long-term decline in church attendance and Christian beliefs in Britain

Occupational Socialisation

A form of secondary socialisation in the workplace that teaches the informal culture and formal expectations of an occupation

Canteen Culture

The informal culture in the police as they spend their free time/down time together

Formal Socialisation

The use of explicit sanctions (negative or positive) to influence behaviour

• e.g. pocket money, detentions

Informal Socialisation

The use of implicit/subtle sanctions to influence behaviour

• e.g. ‘the look’
