Health Literacy
Refers to clients' knowledge and understanding about their conditions and health care options.
Holistic Nursing Care
Care for the whole person: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
Case Managers
Conduits between clients and health care systems ensuring clients receive necessary care.
Sentinel Event
An event resulting in client death or severe temporary harm reported to TJC.
Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs)
Part of the Prospective Payment System, coding clients into specific DRGs for fixed costs.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA)
Legislation aimed at improving healthcare quality while lowering costs and increasing access.
Nurse Practice Act (NPA)
Regulates nursing within each state, executed by the state boards of nursing.
Informed Consent
Consent that is expressed in writing, requiring education on risks and alternatives.
Good Samaritan Laws
Protect nurses from liability when providing care outside of work, as long as they're not negligent.
Whistleblowing
Reporting illegal or unethical practices which can lead to punitive actions against the accused.
Accountability
Legal obligation to do the right thing and accept responsibility for one's actions.
Critical Thinking
Learning to analyze and interpret data to solve problems and achieve desired outcomes.
Team Nursing
Pairs nurses to care for a group of clients, utilizing various experience levels and skills.
IDEAL Discharge Planning
Includes client and caregivers in discharge planning, discussing medications, warning signs, and education.
Interprofessional Collaboration
Collaboration among various health professionals to provide coordinated care.
