Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
The amount of energy expended while at rest, accounting for the energy required to maintain vital functions.
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
The rate of energy expenditure in a fasted state; measures metabolic activity while at rest.
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)
The total amount of calories burned in a day, including RMR, physical activity, and dietary thermogenesis.
Diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT)
The energy required for digestion, absorption, and assimilation of nutrients.
Metabolic Equivalent (MET)
A unit used to estimate the metabolic cost of physical activities; 1 MET is the energy cost at rest.
Lean Body Mass (LBM)
The weight of a person's body minus the weight of their body fat.
Resistance Training
A form of exercise that improves muscular strength and endurance by exercising a muscle or a muscle group against external resistance.
Endurance Training
A type of training aimed at improving the ability to sustain prolonged exercise.
Thermic Effect of Food (TEF)
The increase in metabolic rate after ingestion of food.
Physical Activity Ratio (PAR)
A comparison of the energy required for an activity to the resting metabolic rate.
