Chang’s influence- Nature
Chang was influenced by the visual
qualities of sea life such as the unique
colours textures patterns and forms seen in life under the sea
This is seen in Bracelet (2000) as the white section resembles a crustacean or a shell
Chang’s influence-1960
Being at university in the 60’s pop
culture and the pop art movement influenced Chang
The use of bright colours and shift from classic materials to experimental and new approaches to art and design appealed to Chang. No longer was jewellery confined to precious materials and jemstones. Chang was free to experiment with low cost materials like plastic to create bold works
Chang’s influences - Culture
Chang was influenced by today’s throwaway society , especially the throwaway of plastics. This inspired him to use and repurpose these items in his work. Chang used items like shop signs, toothbrushes and others discarded items to become his artwork . These were used both as a sustainable option and for the bright colours .
Using discarded items also ensured each of Chang’s pieces remained truely unique
