WW2 and termination policy which meant NAs were more united in their resistance to gvmt policies and didn’t need inspiration from BPM
What already existed?
NA pressure groups that were achieving success in gaining civil rights, and gvmt also established bodies like Indian Claims Commission
What was already a feature of NA protest groups?
Militancy, such as National Indian Youth Council and therefore to suggest militancy was inspired by BPM would deny developments taking place amongst NAs
What can developments of protest movements be seen as?
A response to wider developments in US society.
What were attitudes like?
Attitudes towards a range of groups within society were changing, seen in the views of Kennedy and Johnson
What policies encourage groups?
Johnson’s Great Society and his War on Poverty may have encouraged groups to take up their causes believing they had a greater chance of success
What was militancy a direct response to?
conditions NAs found themselves in when they moved into urban areas, and ghettoisation made it easier to organise pressure groups to protest about living conditions and unemployment
What did awful conditions encountered in the cities do?
Made them more determined to preserve culture and way of life
