The exchange of plants, animals, diseases, and technologies between the Americas and the rest of the world following Columbus's voyages.

Spanish Armada
The great fleet sent from Spain against England by Philip II in 1588; defeated by the terrible winds and fire ships.

descendants of the people who first lived in a region (native people)

an economic system in which individuals and private businesses run most industries. Supply, demand, and competition determine prices in the market (You can make a profit!)

conquest
Taking control of a people or place through military force

mercantilism
An economic system where nations sought to increase their wealth and power by obtaining large amounts of gold and silver and by selling more goods than they bought (from their colonies)
balance of trade
difference between how much a country imports and how much it exports

plantation
a large farm

Henry the Navigator
(1394-1460) Portuguese prince who built an observatory and a navigation school to teach sailors how to find their way. (Also paid people to sail on voyages of exploration)

Vasco de Gama
Sailed around Africa and landed on the West coast of India in 1498. (A sear route to Asia has been found!)

Christopher Columbus
An Italian sailor who tried to reach Asia by sailing across the Atlantic in 1492. He is given credit for discovering the "New World," even though he thought he reached Asia. (Actually landed in Bahamas)
Ferdinand Magellan
Portuguese explorer who was the first to circumnavigate the globe (died before he finished but his crew completed it)
Francis Drake
English, First man to survive circum-navigating the globe (And a very famous pirate!) A vast ye sea dogs
Bartolome de Las Casas
Dominican priest who spoke out against mistreatment of Native Americans
