Jupiter
The largest planet in the solar system, significantly more massive than Earth, with a thicker atmosphere and stronger magnetic field.
Galilean satellites
The four largest moons of Jupiter: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, discovered by Galileo Galilei.
Great Red Spot
A giant storm on Jupiter that is larger than Earth and has persisted for hundreds of years.
Oblate spheroid
The shape of Jupiter caused by its rapid rotation, making it wider at the equator than at the poles.
Escape velocity
The speed necessary for an object to break free from the gravitational pull of a planet, which is highest for Jupiter at 60.2 km/s.
Atmospheric composition
The Jovian atmosphere is predominantly composed of 86% hydrogen (H2), 13% helium (He), and trace amounts of other gases.
Ring system
A faint and complex system of rings composed mainly of dust particles, including halo and gossamer rings around Jupiter.
Roche limit
The minimum distance at which a satellite can orbit a planet without being torn apart by tidal forces.
Internal structure of Jupiter
Jupiter's core is estimated to be about eight times the mass of Earth, surrounded by layers of liquid hydrogen and metallic hydrogen.
Shoemaker-Levy 9
A comet that broke apart and collided with Jupiter in 1994, demonstrating the planet's destructive impact capability.
