What does low pKa mean?
Strong acid (greater dissociation)
What does a high pKa mean?
Weaker acid (less dissociation)
What are the rules with pKa, what can we determine with them?
if the ph is below the pka the acid group will be more than 50% protonated
if the ph is above the pka, the acid group will be more than 50% deprotonated
acids are charged at pH above their pka
bases are charged at Ph below their pka
What does the pKa show?
The pKa is the pH at which the group is 50% ionized
