Examples of Standard Precautions of Infection Control
- Washing hands before touching the resident or any supplies
- Not allowing clean supplies to touch your uniform
- Not allowing linens (dirty of clean) to touch the floor
- Wearing gloves when handling body fluids
- Avoiding your uniform to touch the floor
- Avoiding making multiple passes with a washcloth over any mucus membranes while bathing a resident
- Washing hands upon completion of care
Examples of Standard Precautions of Safety Needs
- Ensuring the resident is wearing proper foot wear before standing or walking
- Ensuring a gait belt is tightening appropriately
- Leaving the brakes set on a wheelchair unless it is in use
- Maintaining your own body mechanics throughout care
- Lowering the bed to it's neutral position before completing care
- Instructing a resident to scoot toward you before rolling away when putting them on their side to avoid being too close to the edge of the bed
- Leaving the resident with a call light in their hand before leaving the resident
Examples of Standard Precautions of Resident's Rights
- Greeting the resident by their preferred name
- Providing care to the resident as instructed on their care plan and not deviating away from the care plan
- Closing the curtain to provide privacy during care
- Including the resident in decision making when it pertains to their care
- Maintaining the resident's privacy during care, ensuring not to expose them unless neccessary

What are the target areas of the hand during hand washing?
- Fingers

When will you be evaluated on hand washing during the clinical exam?
- While performing the first skill listed on the care plan
- For the 2nd and 3rd skill listed on the care plan, you will need to tell the NAE "I would wash my hands at this point" at the appropriate times, but you will not be evaluated on how you wash your hands again.

Why would a CNA move a resident's position?
- The resident may be unable to do so themselves so the CNA must move the resident every 2 hrs to prevent the development of pressure sores

What is a safety pause?
A safety pause occurs when the CNA candidate is performing their care plan on test day and is about to do an action that may put the other CNA candidate they are testing with in harms way (i.e. about to stand the candidate without proper footwear, sitting a resident in a wheelchair without the brakes set, feeding the candidate when they are in a slouched or reclined position). The NAE will stop testing to ensure the candidate stays safe. This is not an automatic fail but missing any other checkpoints after this will result in failing the exam.
How tight should the gait/transfer belt be around the resident's waist?
Tight enough that only 4 flat fingers can fit between the belt and the resident's body

- Traditional Bed pan

When do you put on your gloves when assisting a resident using a bed pan?
Wait to put on your gloves until you have returned to the room after the resident has finished using the bed pan. Move the head of the bed back down flat then put on your gloves. Your gloves should be on before attempting to remove the bed pan or bed pad.
What is a fowler's position?
60-90 degree angle of the head of the bed
What is a semi-fowlers position?
30-45 degree angle of the head of the bed
When can you make a correction on test day?
Any time prior to stating your skill is complete
What would you do on test day if you did not grab the correct supplies or enough supplies during your skill?
You can go grab new supplies at anytime, just use a barrier device or glove to open and close drawers if your hands are dirty.
What would you do on test day if you grabbed too much supplies?
Leave the supplies on your table until the end of the skill, take it to the linens or throw it away. Do not put it back in the cabinet after you have touched it as it now considered contaminated.
When providing a partial bed bath, which is the only part of the body that does not require soap?
