Chromosomal abnormalities
Conditions specifically noted in the lecture include abnormalities of chromosomes 21, 18, and 13.
Fetal akinesia
A condition characterized by the absence of swallowing in the fetus.
Twin-Twin transfusion
A specific condition listed alongside chromosomal and fetal abnormalities.
Oxytocin
A synthetic hormone that acts on the uterus to increase contractions (++cx); it is used for the induction of labor.
Side effects of Oxytocin
Includes hypotension, reflex tachycardia, water retention, neonatal jaundice, uterine rupture, and fetal hypoxia.
Uterotonics
A category of medications, including Oxytocin and Misoprostol, used to stimulate uterine contractions.
Misoprostol
A PGE1 analog used to protect against chronic NSAID use and reduce gastric acid; it is used off-label for induction because it acts on the uterus.
Indomethacin (Indocid)
A COX inhibitor (NSAID) used as a 1st line tocolytic agent.
Atosiban (Tractocile)
An oxytocin-receptor antagonist used as a tocolytic to inhibit uterine contractions.
Tocolytics
A class of medications used to suppress premature labor, with agents such as Indomethacin and Atosiban mentioned.
