Gelbvieh
A beef cattle breed originating in the Bavarian region of Germany, with a name that roughly translates to "yellow cattle."
Balancer
A composite breed developed by the American Gelbvieh Association that combines Gelbvieh and Angus genetics, typically ranging from 25% to 75% Gelbvieh.
Heterosis
Also known as hybrid vigor, this refers to the performance boost in areas such as conception rates and calf survival often seen when genetically different breeds are crossed.
Stayability (ST)
A maternal EPD that predicts how likely daughters are to remain productive in the herd.
Cutability
The yield of lean red meat from a carcass; Gelbvieh cattle are historically valued for having high levels of this trait.
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs)
Essential selection tools for breeders that include measures like Calving Ease Direct (CED), Birth Weight (BW), and Ribeye Area (REA).
Maternal Strength
A key Gelbvieh trait characterized by high fertility, strong milk production, longevity, and excellent mothering ability.
Growth and Performance
Genetic contributions from Gelbvieh that result in rapid growth, higher weaning weights, higher yearling weights, and efficient feed conversion.
Marbling (MB)
A carcass quality trait for which Angus genetics are considered excellent and are integrated into Balancer cattle to improve market acceptance.
Black-hided Balancers
A popular crossbreed that fits many feeder calf marketing programs while retaining the maternal and growth advantages of Gelbvieh.
Calving Ease Direct (CED)
An EPD indicating the ease with which a bull's calves are born; modern Gelbvieh breeding programs have greatly improved this trait.
Yearling Weight (YW)
An EPD used to measure the growth performance of cattle at approximately one year of age.
