What are finishes?
Substances applied on the surfaces of products/artefacts to enhance their appearance and protect them from damage.
What is the primary goal of finishing products?
To improve the aesthetic appeal and protect the product from damage such as scratches, fading, and discoloration.
How is Lacquer described in surface finishing?
A clear or colored finish that dries to a hard, durable surface often used on wood and metal to provide a glossy or satin finish.
What is Emulsion paint?
A water-based paint used to coat walls and other surfaces; it is easy to clean and dries quickly.
What are Ceramic tiles made from and where are they used?
They are made from fired clay and are used as a finish on floors and walls.
What material is Plaster of Paris (POP) made from?
Gypsum.
What is Epoxy finish and where is it commonly used?
A two-component system made of a resin and a hardener used on concrete floors and countertops for a durable finish.
What is the process of Anodizing?
An electrochemical process used on aluminum surfaces to form a protective and attractive layer.
How is Powder coating applied to metal surfaces?
Using an electrostatic charge to apply dry powder which is then cured under heat.
What is Electroplating?
A finish used to coat metal surfaces with a thin layer of another metal, such as gold, silver, or nickel.
In the context of finishes, what is a solvent?
A substance used to dissolve or thin other materials to make them more fluid and easier to apply, or to clean surfaces.
What is the source of most common organic solvents used in the finish industry?
Petroleum.
What are the components of Lacquer thinner?
A mixture of solvents such as mineral spirits, toluene, and acetone.
What is Turpentine and what is its use?
A clear, colorless liquid distilled from the resin of certain pine trees used to thin oil paints.
What are garnishes in food preparation?
Small, decorative elements added to food dishes at the end of the cooking process to enhance appearance and flavor.
What are nine ways of applying finishing to food products?
Garnishes, Glaze, Sauces, Dusting, Sprinkling, Drizzle, Carving, Moulding, and Plating.
What type of garnishes should be used for pale foods like fish or chicken?
Garnishes that provide a contrasting color, such as carrots, green pepper, lettuce, and tomatoes.
What garnishes are suggested for red meats such as steak or lamb?
Fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and parsley, or a sprinkle of chopped nuts or seeds.
What are examples of 'Aromatic' garnishes?
Microgreens, sprouts, fresh flowers, and aromatic herbs such as chives, tarragon, and dill.
Give examples of 'Meaty' garnishes and their textures.
Crispy bacon (crunchy), Prosciutto (crispy), and Smoked salmon (soft).
What does the term 'Edge finishes' refer to?
Processes used to neaten and finish the raw edges of materials such as wood, metal, plastic, and fabric.
What is Bevelling?
A process used to create a sloping edge on a material, often used in furniture and cabinetry.
How are the raw edges of fabric seams typically finished to prevent fraying?
With a serged or zigzag stitch.
What materials are commonly used to finish the edges of wood products like furniture?
Veneer, laminate, or paint.
How are the edges of glass products like mirrors protected?
With paint, a powder coating, or a clear coat.
