health disparities
preventable excess morbidity and mortality that impacts a group of people
particular type of health difference closely linked with social, economic, and or environmental disadvantages
NIMHD
a health difference that adversely affects defined disadvantaged populations based on one or more health outcomes
adversely affects groups of people who have systematically experienced greater obstacles to health based on raicla or ethnic group, religion, socioeconomic status, gender, age, mental health, cognitive sensory or pshycial disability, sexual orientation and gender identity, geographic location, other characteristics historically linked to discrimination
healthcare disparities
differences in the quality of healthcare that are not due to access-related factors or clinical needs, preferences, and appropriateness of intervention (racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, age, gender, immigration status)
racism
system of structuring opportunity and assigning value based on social interpretation of how one looks (unfairly disadvantages some and advantages others)
some believe race is a social construct
individual/interpersonal
individual acts of discrimination and prejudice, stereotypes, hate
individual/explicit bias: POC perceiving or wonder they are being targeted based on race (ex: white woman locking car when black man walks by)
individual/implicit bias: unconscious attitudes and beliefs (ex: white medical professional not looking at POC parent and only talking to white partner)
more likely to occur in healthcare settings
when working under time pressure, dealing with complex info, lack of solid knowledge/info to make a decision, cognitive overload, fatigue
