Tennis court oath
a dramatic act of defiance by repersenatives. it was on June 17th-20th when there was an assembly and they were locked out so they moved to a tennis court and made the oath. Marked the start of the revolution.
national assembly
a revolutionary governing body formed on June 17,1789 by representatives. it was used to limit the kings power.
Marie-Antoinette
the queen of France 1774-1792. The wife of Louis XVI. was executed in 1792.
Louis XVI
King of France (1774-1792). He and his wife were corrupt with greed. They started the French Revolution. They were guillotined in 1792. Brought the new laws constitution for France.
Bourgeoise
the part of the 3rd estate who fought for political power. Consisted of Educators, doctors, lawyers, merchants.
3rd Estate
almost all of the people. the working class. Consisted of the poorer people.
2nd estate
wealthy landowners who were powerful government officials. You have to be born into it. Don't pay taxes. Very small amount of people.
1st estate
less than 2% of. the population. The hiararchy, the clergy, and very wealthy people. Didnt pay taxes.
estates system
A social structure that divided society based on privileges.
revolution
a Forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system.
Bastille
on july 14th, 1789, the french prison was stromed by parisians in look for gunpowder and weapons.
declaration of the rights of man
A declaration showing principals of equality, liberty and more. have freedom of speech. inspired the French revolution. Religion and gov must respect it.
Region of terror
The 10 month period of the French revolution where a lot of suspected enemies were killed. Gov used extreme violence and fear
Absolute monarchy
total power in a queen or king.
divine right
a political and religious doctrine assuring a monarch from God.
