Individual selection

The process of selecting certain individuals from a population for mass mating.

Pedigree selection

Selection based on the performance of parents or ancestors.

Family selection

Selection based on the performance of the whole family, including progeny and sib testing.

Flock mating

A mass mating system where a specific male-to-female ratio is used.

Pen mating

A mating method where a group of hens mate with a single cock in a pen.

Stud mating

A mating method where a male is kept separately and females are selected one by one.

Shift mating

A mating method where sires are shifted in breeding pens and a female can be mated with several males.

Artificial insemination (A.I.)

A method where semen is collected from males and females are inseminated.

Tandem Method

Selecting only one trait at a time during the breeding process.

Selection Index

Also known as the total score method, it involves estimating the bird's total breeding value.

Economic traits in breeders (Layers)

Traits such as fertility, hatchability, viability, egg production, egg quality, feed efficiency, and persistency.

Economic traits in breeders (Broilers)

Traits such as body weights at various ages, feed efficiency, fertility, hatchability, viability, and slaughter traits.
