organ
collection of tissues working together to perform a function
cell
structural/functional basic unit of all living organisms
tissue
A group of cells working together to perform a particular function. connective, epithelial, muscle, nervous.
Function
connective: link body parts together.
epithelial: barrier between outside, controls what goes in
muscle: fibers flex to allow movement
nervous: send and relay signals
Subtypes
connective = loose, dense, fluid, supporting
epithelial = squamous, columnar, ciliated columnar, cubodial, glandular, transitional, pseudo stratified, stratified, simple
muscle = smooth, striated, cardiac
nervous = motor, sensory, inter
Connective tissue subtypes
dense = contains collagen, forms tendons and ligaments, connects muscle to bone - bone to bone
loose = holds organs in place, attaches epi tissue to other tissues, mesh of fibres, fibres can be elastic, collagenous or reticular.
specialised = support organism structure, has bone and cartilage
fluid = includes blood and nymph, tissues are liquid, connect whole body, pumped by heart.
Epithelial tissue subtypes
simple
squamous = allow material to pass thru by diffusion + filtration, secretes lube
cubodial epithelium = secretes + absorbs
columnar epithelium (tall) = absorbs and secretes mucous + enzymes
stratified
squamous epithelium (flattened) = protects against abrasion
cubodial epithelium (symmetrical) = protective tissue
columnar epithelium (tall) = secretes + protects
pseudostratified
columnar epithelium (messy single layer) = secretes mucous, cilitated tissue moves it
transitional
epithelium = allows urinary organs to expand and stretch
glandular cells = secrete proteins into cavity above
ciliated columnar cells = tall epithelial cells w cilia
