DSM5 Panic Attack

Abrupt surge of intense fear or discomfort peaking within minutes with 4 of the following symptoms:

  • Palpitations

    Sweating

    Trembling / Shaking

    Shortness of breath / Smothering

    Feeling of choking

    Chest pain / discomfort

    Nausea / Abdominal distress

  • Feeling dizzy / light-headed

    Chills / heat sensations

    Paresthesias

    Derealization / Depersonalization

    Fear of losing control or “going crazy”

    Fear of dying

DSM5 Panic Disorder

A. Recurrent unexpected panic attacks

B. 1 attack has been followed by 1month of 1 of the follows:

  1. Persistent concern or worry about additional attack or consequences

  2. Significant maladpative change in behavior related to attacks

C. The disturbance is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance or another medical condition

D. The disturbance is not better explained by another mental disorder (e.g. panic only in social situations – social anxiety disorder; specific phobias)

A. Marked fear or anxiety of 2 of the following:

  1. Using public transportation

  2. Being in open spaces

  3. Bening in enclosed places

  4. Standing in line / being in crowds

  5. Being outside the home alone

B. Patient fears / avoids the situations because thought that escape might be difficult or help might not be available in the event of developing panic-like symptoms or other incapacitant/embarrassing symptoms

C. Situations almost always provoke fear/anxiety

D. Situations are activly avoided, require a companion, or endured with intense fear / anxeity

E. Fear/Anxiety is out of proportion to acutal danger posed

F. Fear/Anxiety or Avoidance is presistent for at least 6 months
