Purpose of meiosis
To create unique individuals in order to create variations and so all humans are not prone to the same diseases
Meiosis starts as a (diploid/haploid) cell and ends with 4 (diploid/haploid) cells
Diploid, haploid
What forms in the cell before it can divide
a tetrad has to form
Where do homologous chromosomes lineup before they split?
On top of one another along the midpoint of the cell
In anaphase one what gets pulled apart by the spindle fibers?
Homologous chromosomes
In Anna phase 2, what gets pulled apart by the spindle fibers
Sister chromatids
Why is meiosis known as reduction division?
The four daughter cells have half of the information as the parent cell. There is only half the information because the other parent will make up the other half during fertilization
What is crossing over?
When homologous chromosomes in a tetrad exchange genetic information
What is independent assortment
The randomized lining up of chromosomes before they are pulled apart, during anaphase one
Meiosis produces what kind of cells
Gametes / sex cells
How many times does the cell divide
Two times
Are the daughter cells identical to the parent cell and
/or to each other
No, the daughter cells are completely different from each other and from the parent cell
How many daughter cells are created?
4
