What is an addition reaction?
Two molecules join to form one product (usually across a C=C bond)
What is an elimination reaction?
One molecule splits to form a double bond + small molecule (e.g. H2O or HX)
What is a substitution reaction?
One atom or group is replaced by another
What is a nucleophilic substitution?
A nucleophile replaces a leaving group (e.g. OH- replaces halogen)
What is an electrophilic addition?
An electrophile adds across a C=C double bond
What is an oxidation reaction?
Gain of oxygen OR loss of hydrogen
What is a reduction reaction?
Gain of hydrogen OR loss of oxygen
What is a condensation reaction?
Two molecules join and produce to form a larger molecule and a small molecule (usually water)
What is a hydrolysis reaction?
A molecule is broken using water
What is a neutralisation reaction?
Acid reacts with base to form salt + water
