Effect of trenches on the treatment of soldiers
Massive Artillery Shell Craters: prevented motorized ambulances from reaching the front - relied solely on human man power - CCS had to move further back from artillery range
The Constricted Trench Layout: A zigzag formation made it awkward to carry a stretcher through - thin trench caused traffic jams and delayed evacuation for weeks
Intense fertilizers: Land was previously farmland which contained a lot of bacteria causing gas gangrene and tetanus
Trench illnesses
Trench foot - fungal infection resulting in gangrene - caused by keeping feet in water for too long - cure was to change socks
Trench fever - illness causing sudden high fevers, severe headaches, muscle pain. - caused by body lice - cured by delousing stations with huge chemical baths
Shell shock - psychological trauma - caused by non-stop artillery - misunderstood as cowardice before realising it was mental not physical
Difference between Aseptic and Anti-septic
Anti-septic: chemicals applied to live tissue to kill germs
Aseptic: environment designed to be completely free of all living microorganisms to prevent contamination
