Deuteronomy
The 5th and final book of the Pentateuch, containing Moses' 3 speeches to the new generation of Israelites.
Joshua
The individual who took over the leadership of Israel in Chapter 34, following the death of Moses.
Author of Deuteronomy
Moses is identified as the author based on the book's testimony and references by Jesus in Mark 7:10 and 10:3−5.
Written Date
The book was probably written around 1406 B.C. at the end of the wilderness wanderings.
Moses' Age at Death
Moses was 120 years old when he died.
Period Covered
The book covers a 70-day period between the 40th year and the 41st year after the exodus from Egypt.
Plains of Moab
The location where the nation of Israel was encamped when the context of the book occurred.
Initial Audience
The 2nd generation that emerged from the wilderness wanderings as they awaited the Canaan conquest.
1st Sermon (Chs. 1-4)
A retrospective and historical sermon that recites God's saving acts to encourage Israel to remember what God did for her.
2nd Sermon (Chs. 5-26)
An introspective, emotional, and legal sermon calling for Israel to love, reverence, and serve God with all their heart.
3rd Sermon (Chs. 27-34)
A prospective and prophetic sermon that explains what God will do for Israel and provides a summation of covenant demands.
Edomites, Moabites, and Ammonites
Three groups that God commanded Israel not to disturb because He had given land inheritance to each of them.
Decalogue
The Ten Commandments, which Moses expounded upon to show their application to daily life in Canaan.
Horeb
The name used in the text to refer to the location where God summoned Israel and gave them the Ten Commandments (also known as Sinai).
Section Chs. 12-25
The portion of the second sermon where Moses applied each of the Ten Commandments to specific situations in civil, social, and ceremonial life.
First-fruits and Third Year Tithe
The offerings the nation used to demonstrate that they remembered the covenant with the Lord.
Shechem
The location where the covenant renewal ceremony was to take place after the second generation entered Canaan.
Mt. Gerizim
The location where half of the 12 tribes stood to represent the covenant blessings for obedience.
Mt. Ebal
The location where half of the tribes stood to represent the covenant for disobedience or curses.
Apostasy
The rejection of God, which Moses predicted future generations of Israel would exhibit.
Mt. Nebo
The location where Moses died in Chapter 32.
Ark of the Covenant
The place where Moses instructed the law to be kept following his prediction of Israel's future apostasy.
