What are the distinct roles called that adjectives play?
Noun modifiers and predicate adjectives.
Explain the distinct roles (Adjectives).
As noun modifiers, adjectives always precede the nouns they modify. As predicate adjectives, adjectives follow linking (descriptive) verbs and describe the subject.
Remember the pair test. It also helps distinguish adverbs from adjectives.
“the special, deep-dish, Chicago-Style pizza”
“the absolutely dreadful old man”
Adjectives can also be subdivided into two main classes.
Determiners and descriptive adjectives.
Determiner (McGraw-Hill)
Determiners are a diverse group of modifiers that precede descriptive adjectives for example, “the” is a determiner and “old” is a descriptive adjective. The old house. Old the house.
Part of speech is determined by function.
When nouns and pronouns are used in their possessive forms, they are functioning as adjectives and are no longer classified as nouns and pronouns per se.
Determiner (Grammarly Definition)
Determiners are words that come before nouns and specify something about their quantity, definiteness, or ownership. They modify nouns by a subtractive process rather than the additive one descriptive adjectives use. Descriptive adjectives add detail to our understanding of the nouns they modify, while determiners narrow down the identity of a noun by introducing specificity.
What is a determiner? (Grammarly)
A determiner is a word that appears before a noun, providing clarifying context about the number, definiteness, or ownership of the noun.
