Transtheoretical Model of Change
A model proposing that change occurs in stages (e.g., Pre-Contemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, Maintenance) and involves various processes.
Pre-Contemplation
The stage where the client has no intention of changing their behavior.
Contemplation
The stage where the client is aware of the problem but is ambivalent about making a change.
Preparation
The stage where the client is ready to take action within the next 30 days.
Action
The stage where the client is actively changing their behavior.
Maintenance
The stage where the client has sustained changes for 6+ months.
Motivational Interviewing
A person-centered counseling method that explores and resolves a client's ambivalence about behavior change.
OARS
An acronym representing core skills in Motivational Interviewing: Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries.
Change Talk
Any language that argues for making a change or exploring new ideas.
Sustain Talk
Language that favors the status quo and expresses resistance to change.
Cognitive Dissonance
The tension that results when a person's actions contradict their beliefs or values, motivating them to change.
Resilience
The ability to recover from difficulties and adapt to change.
Harm Reduction
An approach that minimizes negative consequences of substance use without requiring complete cessation.
Trauma-Informed Care
An approach to care that recognizes the impact of trauma and seeks to avoid re-traumatization.
Ambivalence
An internal conflict about change; a natural part of the change process.
Assessment Trap
A disengagement trap focusing too much on information gathering without exploring motivation.
Expert Trap
A disengagement trap where the counselor acts as if they have all the answers, which can alienate the client.
