What is the composition of blood?
Plasma (55%) Formed elements (45%)
what is ormed elements made up of?
rbcs, wbcs, and platelets
What is plasma?
Plasma is the liquid part of blood made mostly of water, proteins, nutrients, hormones, wastes, and electrolytes.
what are the functions of blood?
Transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and wastes; Regulates body temperature, pH, and fluid balance; Protects the body through clotting and immune defense
What is the function of red blood cells (erythrocytes)?
Carry oxygen using hemoglobin and transport some carbon dioxide
What is the function of white blood cells (leukocytes)?
Defend the body against infection and disease
What is the function of platelets (thrombocytes)?
Help blood clot to prevent blood loss
What is the buffy coat?
A thin layer in centrifuged blood containing white blood cells and platelets between plasma and red blood cells
What is agglutination?
The clumping of red blood cells caused by incompatible blood types.
What antigen is found in Type A blood?
A antigen
What antibodies are found in Type A blood?
Anti-B antibodies
What antigen is found in Type B blood?
B antigen
What antibodies are found in Type B blood?
Anti-A antibodies
What antigens are found in Type AB blood?
Both A and B antigens
What antibodies are found in Type AB blood?
None
What antigens are found in Type O blood?
No A or B antigens
What antibodies are found in Type O blood?
Both Anti-A and Anti-B antibodies
Which blood type is the universal donor?
O-
Which blood type is the universal recipient?
Type AB positive
What is hematocrit?
The percentage of blood volume made up of red blood cells.
How do you calculate hematocrit?
Hematocrit= volume of rbcs/total blood volume x100
what is the function of the cardiovascular system?
To transport blood, oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and wastes throughout the body.
Where is the heart located?
In the thoracic cavity, between the lungs, slightly left of center
What is the function of the pericardium?
The pericardium surrounds and protects the heart, reduces friction, and helps anchor the heart in place
What are the 4 chambers of the heart?
Right and left atrium, right and left ventricle
What is the function of the right atrium?
Receives deoxygenated blood from the body
What is the function of the right ventricle?
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What is the function of the left atrium?
Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs
What is the function of the left ventricle?
Pumps oxygenated blood to the body
What is the septum?
A muscular wall separating the right and left sides of the heart.
