Hemoglobin
A protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen and gives blood its red color.
Quarternary structure
A protein structure formed by the assembly of multiple polypeptide chains.
Anemia
A condition caused by low levels of hemoglobin in the blood.
Erythrocytosis
A condition characterized by an excess of red blood cells in the blood.
Transport of Respiratory Gases
The main function of hemoglobin, involving the carrying of oxygen from lungs to tissues and carbon dioxide from tissues to lungs.
Heme
An iron-containing prosthetic group of hemoglobin, comprising a porphyrin ring and Fe²+.
Bilirubin
The end product of heme degradation, an orange-yellow pigment produced mainly from the breakdown of hemoglobin.
Jaundice
A yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes caused by increased bilirubin levels in the blood.
Pre-hepatic jaundice
A type of jaundice caused by increased hemolysis of red blood cells.
Hepatic jaundice
A type of jaundice due to liver cell damage affecting bilirubin uptake and secretion.
Post-hepatic jaundice
A type of jaundice resulting from obstruction of bile ducts.
Conjugated bilirubin
Water-soluble bilirubin that has been processed in the liver and can be excreted.
Unconjugated bilirubin
Water-insoluble bilirubin that circulates in the blood bound to albumin.
Phototherapy
A treatment for neonatal jaundice that uses blue fluorescent light to convert bilirubin.
Bilirubin metabolism
A series of steps involving the production, transport, conjugation, and excretion of bilirubin.
