AANPCB (FNP-C) Exam
A 150-question clinically focused exam (135 scored) where older adults are the largest age group in the blueprint.
ANCC (FNP-BC) Exam
A 175-question exam (150 scored) that includes clinical care plus professional role, research, ethics, quality, and systems content.
Diabetes Mellitus Diagnostic Criteria
A1C≥6.5%, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) ≥126mg/dL, or random glucose ≥200mg/dL with classic symptoms.
Cervical Cancer Screening (Ages 21-29)
Cytology every 3 years; screening should not begin before age 21 regardless of sexual activity.
Lung Cancer Screening Criteria
Annual low-dose CT for adults age 50-80 with a ≥20 pack-year smoking history who currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years.
AAA (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm) Screening
A one-time abdominal ultrasound for men aged 65-75 who have ever smoked.
Aortic Stenosis
A systolic crescendo-decrescendo murmur radiating to the carotids; presenting with a clinical triad of syncope, angina, and dyspnea.
COPD Diagnosis
Confirmed by spirometry showing a post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC<0.70.
Sensitivity
The ability of a test to correctly identify those with a disease (SnNout); a negative result helps rule out the condition.
Specificity
The ability of a test to correctly identify those WITHOUT a disease (SpPin); a positive result helps rule in the condition.
Cauda Equina Syndrome
A red-flag surgical emergency characterized by back pain with saddle anesthesia, bowel/bladder dysfunction, or progressive weakness.
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
A condition presenting with thin gray discharge, a fishy odor, and "clue cells" on microscopy; treated with metronidazole.
Trichomoniasis
An STI presenting with frothy discharge and a "strawberry cervix"; requires treatment of both the patient and partners.
Preeclampsia
New-onset hypertension after 20 weeks of gestation with proteinuria or end-organ signs (headache, vision changes, RUQ pain).
Nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin)
First-line antibiotic for uncomplicated cystitis; must be avoided in pyelonephritis due to inadequate renal tissue penetration.
Beers Criteria
Guidelines used in geriatrics to identify high-risk medications to avoid, including high-risk sedatives, anticholinergics, and long-acting drugs.
Kawasaki Disease
Pediatric emergency presenting with fever for 5 days, conjunctivitis, strawberry tongue, rash, and swollen hands/feet; carries a risk for coronary artery damage.
Autonomy
The ethical principle that supports an individual's right to self-determination and the right of a competent adult to refuse recommended treatment.
Scaphoid Fracture
An injury suggested by "snuffbox tenderness" after a fall on an outstretched hand; requires immobilization even if initial x-rays are negative.
Epiglottitis
A deep airway emergency in children presenting with drooling, tripod positioning, toxic appearance, and a muffled voice.
Cohort Study
A type of research study that compares the incidence of an outcome in exposed versus unexposed groups; commonly uses Relative Risk.
Case-Control Study
A type of research study that starts with an outcome and looks backward at exposures; classically associated with Odds Ratios.
