Urbanism
The characteristics and lifestyle of people living in urban areas.
MDC (More Developed Country)
Countries with advanced economies, usually characterized by higher income levels, industrialization, and a high standard of living.
Feudal Cities
Cities developed during the medieval period characterized by a central church and defensive walls.
Shock Cities
Cities that experience rapid growth that leads to significant urban challenges such as pollution, overcrowding, and inadequate infrastructure.
Entrepot
A trading post or port where goods are imported, stored, and traded, often to be exported again.
Special Economic Zone (SEZ)
Areas within a country where the business and trade laws are different from the rest of the country, usually to attract foreign investments.
Threshold
The minimum number of people needed to support a certain industry or service.
Bid-Rent Theory
A geographical theory that states land prices and demand for land increase the closer one gets to the city center.
Gentrification
The process where urban renewal attracts more affluent residents, often displacing poorer communities.
Urban Heat Island Effect
The phenomenon where urban areas become significantly warmer than their rural surroundings due to human activities.
Mixed-Use Development
Urban design that blends residential, commercial, and sometimes industrial spaces into a single area.
Smart Growth Policies
Urban planning practices aimed at preventing urban sprawl and promoting sustainable development.
Urban Influence Zone
The area of land impacted by the urban environment, including economic and social aspects.
Primate City
A city that is significantly larger and more influential than any other city in the country, often with more than twice the population.
Suburbanization
The migration of population from urban areas to suburbs, often resulting in urban decay in former city centers.
Urban Banana
The zone of urbanization stretching across Eurasia from London to Tokyo.
Greenbelts
Areas of undeveloped land surrounding urban areas that aim to limit urban sprawl.
Cumulative Causation (Multiplier Effect)
The process through which development spurs more development, leading to more basic industries and services.
