What are the three types of factors that impact development?
Physical, economic, historical
How does being landlocked cause uneven development?
Cut off from seaborne trade routes, which are important for economic growth
ex. South Sudan has lowest HDI in world, and is landlocked
How does being a smaller country affect a country’s development?
Fewer human/natural resources
How can disease affect development?
Disease can mean a population isn’t healthy enough to be able to get an education and work. Disease can also destroy crops (ex. pests like locusts, and malaria)
How can extreme weather events affect development?
Can mean things are constantly destroyed and need to be rebuilt, which can be expensive. If people die, there is a smaller, and disadvantaged workforce
What are examples of natural resources a country can have?
Water
Forests, for timber, medicine, food
Fossil fuels (for energy)
Fertile soils (agriculture)
Rocks for construction
Why does a reliance on imports cause uneven development?
Their supplies aren’t as secure, political issues can cause their resources to disappear
Energy, water and food security are crucial to the development of a country
How can poverty affect development?
A lack of money means not enough money for the building of infrastructure to improve education, sanitation and overall living standard
How can trade affect development?
Countries that export primary goods won’t make as much profit as they earn less income than secondary goods (processed)
HICs can have more power than LICs and be able to control trade, so that they have lower price and the HIC gets a better deal
How can technology affect development?
Can help with water, food and energy security
Mechanisation of agriculture brings larger yields, and land surveying can help identify areas with underground resources
More efficient usage of existing resources
How can (historical) colonisation affect development?
Colonised countries usually had to give up their natural resources to the colonising country, meaning that they usually didn’t get a chance to develop on their own
How can conflict affect development?
People are fighting instead of working
Money is being used to buy weapons rather than invest infrastructure
Existing infrastructure is damaged
