Redox Reactions
Reactions that involve the transfer of electrons, where one reactant is oxidized and another is reduced.
Oxidation
The loss of electrons by a reactant in a redox reaction.
Reduction
The gain of electrons by a reactant in a redox reaction.
OIL RIG
A mnemonic to remember that 'Oxidation Is Loss' and 'Reduction Is Gain' of electrons.
Synthesis Reaction
A type of reaction where two or more reactants combine to form a single product.
Single Displacement Reaction
A type of reaction where one element displaces another in a compound.
Sample Redox Reaction
The reaction of magnesium with oxygen to form magnesium oxide: 2Mg(s) + O2(g) → 2MgO(s).
Silver Bromide Decomposition
A redox reaction where silver bromide decomposes into silver metal and bromine vapour: 2AgBr(s) → 2Ag(s) + Br2(g).
Electrolysis of Sodium Chloride
A process that produces sodium and chlorine gas by passing an electric current through molten sodium chloride.
Oxidation (Modern Definition)
Defined as the transfer of electrons from a reactant.
Not a Redox Reaction
The decomposition of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) does not involve electron transfer, thus it is not a redox reaction.
