Emotional intelligence

Soft skills

OARS
An acronym for communication techniques: Open-ended questions, Affirm, Reflect, Summarize.
Three learning styles
Visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
Motivational interviewing
Conversations that help people talk themselves into change.
SMART
A goal-setting framework standing for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-sensitive.
SMARTERS
An extension of SMART goals that adds Evaluate, Realign, and Success.
Open goal
An exploratory, flexible goal focused on effort and experience, such as seeing how many times one can work out in a month.
Exercise adherence
The ability to consistently stick to an exercise program.
Transtheoretical model
A model describing the stages of behaviour change.
Stages of change
The five phases of the transtheoretical model: Precontemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, and Maintenance.
Precontemplation
The stage of change where an individual is not ready to change behaviour.
Contemplation
The stage of change where an individual is thinking about change.
Preparation
The stage of change where an individual is getting ready to take action.
Action
The stage of change where an individual is actively making changes.
Maintenance
The stage of change focused on sustaining healthy behaviours long term.
Portfolio career
Having multiple sources of fitness-related income.
Ideal client avatar
The specific type of client a trainer wants to work with.
Visual learner
An individual who learns best through seeing demonstrations and visuals.
Auditory learner
An individual who learns best through verbal instruction and sound cues.
Kinesthetic learner
An individual who learns best through movement and feeling.
Client empowerment
Helping clients believe in their ability to succeed.
Self-efficacy
An individual's belief in one’s own ability to succeed.
Intersectionality
Overlapping identities that affect a person's experiences and health.
Inclusive fitness
Creating safe and accessible exercise environments for everyone.
Boutique gym
A small gym offering specialized and personalized services.
Corporate wellness
Fitness and wellness services offered through workplaces.
Mobile personal training
A service where the trainer travels to client homes or locations.
