Violence
A form of abuse involving intimate partners, children, and older adults.
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)
Physical, sexual, and psychological abuse by a current or former spouse or partner.
Psychological Abuse
Involves threats, intimidation, or destructive behaviors used to manipulate or assert dominance.
Child Abuse
Includes acts of commission and acts of omission related to the treatment of children.
Acts of Commission
Intentional harmful behaviors directed toward a child, including physical and emotional abuse.
Acts of Omission
Failure to meet a child's basic needs, often referred to as neglect.
Sexual Abuse
Any form of nonconsenting sexual activity, including rape.
Stalking
A pattern of repeated unwanted contact and harassment.
Human Trafficking
The use of force, fraud, or coercion for labor or commercial sex acts.
Elder Abuse
Abuse directed at older adults, can take the form of physical, emotional, or financial abuse.
Cycle of Violence
A pattern of escalating abuse consisting of tension building, violent eruption, and remorse.
Comorbidities associated with IPV
Chronic stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and various medical conditions.
Intergenerational Transmission of Violence
The concept that children who witness violence may perpetuate violent behavior as adults.
Social-Ecologic Model of Violence Prevention
A framework suggesting that less advantaged communities exert less control over violent behavior.
Traditional characteristics of perpetrators
Often include low self-esteem, personality disorders, and a history of violence.
Safety Assessment
An evaluation process to determine the risk of violence or harm to a victim.
