Covalent bond
A type of bond where atoms share electrons instead of giving and taking them.
Molecule
Another name for a covalent bond between atoms.
Single bond
A covalent bond where two atoms share one pair of valence electrons.
Double bond
A covalent bond where two atoms share two pairs of valence electrons.
Triple bond
A covalent bond where two atoms share three pairs of valence electrons.
Polar bond
A covalent bond where electrons are shared unequally between atoms.
Nonpolar bond
A covalent bond where electrons are shared equally between atoms.
Properties of covalent bonds
Usually have low melting and boiling points and do not conduct electricity when dissolved in water.
Insulating materials
Plastics and rubber are used to insulate electric wires because they are poor conductors of electricity.
