What does the hypothalamus and pituitary produce?
hypothalamus → GnRH
Pituitary → LH and FSH
How do protein vs steroid hormones act?
proteins bind to surface receptors
Steroids are lipid-soluble and act on receptors inside the cell to change gene expression
What do 5-alpha reductase and aromatase do?
5-alpha reductase → converts testosterone to DHT
Aromatase → converts it to estradiol
Why is testosterone a pro-hormone?
Because it can be converted into other active hormones (DHT or Estradiol) to exert different effects
What happens if you take exogenous steroids?
It causes negative feedback, leading to decreased natural testosterone and sperm production
