Noun
A noun is a person place or a thing or an idea.
Pronoun
A pronoun replaces a noun to avoid repetition.
Verb
Shows action or state or state of being.
Adjective
Describes a noun. (What kind, how many, or which one.)
Adverb
Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb. (Slowly, quickly, very.)
Preposition
Describes the place, time, or direction. Shows the relationship between a noun and another word. (In, on, at, under.)
Conjunction
Connects two words, phrases, or clauses. (For, and, but, nor, or.)
Interjection
A word that shows emotion. (Wow, hey, oh.)
What does a complete sentence include ?
Subject & Verb.
What is an incomplete sentence?
A sentence missing a verb or subject.
What is a run on sentence?
Two complete sentences incorrectly joined.
What is an independent clause?
A complete thought that can stand alone.
What is a dependent clause?
Must be attached to an independent clause, cannot stand alone.
What does a dependent clause start with?
Subordinating Conjunction (since, when, if, while, because, who, that, etc.)
When to use apostrophes?
Possession-“the nurse’s chart vs the nurses’ station” Contractions “don’t”
When to use a semicolon?
Use to connect closely related independent clauses.
When to use a colon?
Used to introduce a list or explanation.
When to use a hyphen?
To join two or more words that serve as a single adjective before a noun.
Homograph
a word that shares the same spelling as another word but has a different meaning, origin, and sometimes a different pronunciation
Homophone
a word that is pronounced the same as another word but has a different meaning and, often, a different spelling
Homonyms
Words that are spelled the same and sound the same with different meanings
Period
Every declarative sentence should conclude with a period
Proper Noun
Specific names given to common nouns
Subject
It tells who or what the sentence is about
Predicate
It tells what someone or something is or does
Modifier
Words of phrase that adds information about another word or phrase. Su
Subject Complement
A noun that renames the subject, an adjective that “describes” the subject, succeeds the “linking verb” which links to its subject.
Object Complement
A noun, adjective, or phrase which adds information about the direct object.
Simple Sentence
One independent clause
Compound Sentence
Link two or more independent clauses together by a coordinating conjunction.
Complex Sentences
One independent clause & one dependent clause
