What is horizontal bone loss?
Bone loss occurs evenly across multiple teeth, creating a relatively level alveolar bone height parallel to the CEJs of adjacent teeth.
What is vertical (angular) bone loss?
Bone loss occurs unevenly, creating and angular or wedge-shaped defect next to one or more teeth.
How do you distinguish horizontal from vertical bone loss on a radiograph?
*Horizontal: Uniform, level reduction in bone height
*Vertical: Uneven/angular reduction creating an intrabony defect.
