Why do cells need to divide?
To replace dead or damaged cells, for growth of an organism, for repair of body tissue, and for reproduction (e.g., production of gametes).
Interphase
The longest stage of cell division, comprising 90% of the cell cycle, during which the cell nucleus is visible.
G1 phase
The growth phase in interphase where the cell grows.
S phase
The synthesis phase in interphase where DNA replication occurs.
G2 phase
The preparation phase in interphase where organelles are copied in preparation for cell division.
Nucleosome
A structure formed when DNA coils around histone proteins.
Chromatin
The structure formed by nucleosomes that coils to form chromosomes.
Somatic cells
Body cells that contain 46 chromosomes.
Gametes
Reproductive cells (sperm and eggs) that contain 23 chromosomes.
