Brow Ridge
A bony ridge located above the eye sockets of all primates. A prominent ridge protected ancient hominins' faces by distributing forces developed during biting and chewing.

cranium
Encloses the brain and protects it from injury.

sagttial crest
A bony ridge running along the midline of the top of the cranium for attachment of jaw muscles.

nuchal crest
A ridge of bone at the back of the skull for the attachment of neck muscles.

foramen magnum
A large opening at the base of the skull through which the spinal cord enters the skull.

zygomatic arch
The 'cheek-bone'. Jaw muscles used for chewing pass through this arch. The muscles are attached from the skull to mandible.

mandible
The lower jaw; for the attachment of jaw muscles.

dental arcade
The shape made by the rows of teeth in an upper jaw. Humans' dental arcade is V-shaped / parabolic, while apes is much more U-shaped.

canines
Teeth used to tear and rip food.

premolars and molars
Teeth used to crush and grind food.

diastema
A gap between the upper incisors and canines. The gap is used to accommodate the enlarged lower canines.

prognathism
When the lower portion of the face markedly projects forward.
