Dew Point
at constant pressure and water vapor content, the temperature at which the rate of condensation equals the rate of evaporation
Humidity
The amount of water vapor in the air
Precipitation
Any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches Earth's surface.
Relative Humidity
The ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the amount of water vapor needed to reach saturation at a given temperature.
Air Pressure
The measure of the force with which air molecules push on a surface
Visibility
degree of clearness of the atmosphere, with reference to the distance at which objects can be clearly seen
Weather
the short-term state of the atmosphere, including temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, and visibility
Climate
the weather conditions in an area over a long period of time
Latitude
Distance north or south of the equator
Topography
the size and shape of the land surface features of a region
Front
A boundary between two air masses
Air Mass
a large body of air throughout which temperature and moisture content are similar
Condensation
The change of state from a gas to a liquid
Types of fronts?
Warm, Cold, Stationary
Low pressure
A mass of rising warm air that usually bring wet, stormy weather.
High Pressure
A mass of sinking cool air that usually bring fair weather.
Long Term Climate Change
Ex: ice age, global warming, tectonic plates shifting, Sun Cycles
Short Term Climate Change
asteroids, volcanic eruptions, el nino & la nina, burning fossil fuels, deforestation
Wind
The horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure
5 Factors That Influence Climate
Latitude, Wind currents, Elevation, closeness to mountains of water, ocean currents
What are the four main factors of weather?
Temperature, Wind, Moisture, Air Pressure
Latitude Zones
polar, temperate, tropical
Rain
water falling in drops from vapor condensed in the atmosphere
Snow
precipitation falling from clouds in the form of ice crystals
Sleet
Formed when rain falls through a layer of freezing air.
Hail
precipitation of ice pellets when there are strong rising air currents
Warm Front
a front where warm air moves over cold air and brings drizzly rain and then are followed by warm and clear weather
Cold Front
forms when cold air moves under warm air which is less dense and pushes air up (produces thunderstorms heavy rain or snow
El Niño
(oceanography) a warm ocean current that flows along the equator from the date line and south off the coast of Ecuador at Christmas time
La Niña
A cooling of the ocean surface off the western coast of South America, occurring periodically every 4 to 12 years and affecting Pacific and other weather patterns.
