Captain (Navy)
Pay Grade: 0-6, Equivalent Marine Corps Rank: Colonel.
Master Chief (Navy)
Full Rank: Master Chief Petty Officer (E-9).
Officer Lineal Number
An 8-digit number assigned to Navy officers, used to determine seniority among officers of the same rank.
12-Hour Clock System
Divides the day into two 12-hour periods, from 1 AM to 12 PM.
24-Hour Clock System
Military time representation, where hours are counted from 0000 to 2359.
Bulkhead
Wall of a ship.
Ladder
Stairs on a ship.
Head
Bathroom on a ship.
Rack
Bed on a ship.
Galley/Chow Hall
Dining area on a ship.
Boom
Supports the main sail; applicable to sailing vessels.
Rudder
Steers the ship.
EPIRB
Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon used to send a distress signal.
SCUBA
Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.
Squid
Slang term for a Navy sailor.
Scuttlebutt
Rumors or gossip or also refers to the ship's water fountain.
Windward
The side facing the wind.
Leeward
The side away from the wind.
Flood Tide
Water moving toward shore.
Ebb Tide
Water moving away from shore.
Slack Water
Little or no current between tide changes.
Variation (Compass Terms)
Difference between True North and Magnetic North.
Deviation (Compass Terms)
Compass error caused by nearby metal or electronics.
Red Lights at Night
Preserves night vision and allows sailors to read charts in darkness.
Nominal Range
Distance a light should be visible in clear weather.
Luminous Range
Actual distance a light is visible based on weather conditions.
Set (Navigation)
Direction the current pushes the ship.
Drift (Navigation)
Speed of the current.
Dead Reckoning
Navigation using course direction, speed, time traveled, adjusted for set and drift.
Advance (Navigation)
Distance forward during a turn.
Transfer (Navigation)
Sideways movement during a turn.
Star Navigation
Technique using stars to determine position.
Clear Ocean Water
The blue color of water comes from light scattering.
