Colonialism
The practice of acquiring full or partial control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.
Mode of Production
The way in which goods are produced in a society, including the means of production and relations of production.
Black Bourgeoisie
A term used to describe the upwardly mobile Black middle class, often critiqued for their perceived detachment from the struggles of poorer Black communities.
Triple Oppression
The intersecting oppressions experienced by individuals based on race, class, and gender.
Hegemony
The dominance of one group over others, often maintained through cultural, ideological means, rather than through force.
Intersectionality
A framework for understanding how various forms of inequality or discrimination overlap and intersect.
World System
A social system that encompasses the entire globe, considering the interactions and relationships between countries.
Privilege
A special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.
Civil Rights Act
A landmark piece of legislation in the United States that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
Bretton Woods Agreements
A series of agreements that established the post-World War II international monetary system.
Roe vs Wade
A landmark Supreme Court decision that established a woman's legal right to have an abortion.
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
A resolution that granted President Lyndon B. Johnson broad powers to conduct military operations in Vietnam.
Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution
A sociopolitical movement initiated by Mao Zedong in China aiming to preserve Chinese communism by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements.
OPEC Oil Embargo
An embargo imposed by Arab oil-exporting nations that caused a significant increase in oil prices and economic turmoil in the U.S. in 1973.
Volcker Shock
Economic policies implemented by Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker in the late 1970s to combat inflation, leading to a recession.
