St. Thomas Aquinas' Five Ways
The five philosophical arguments to prove God is real: The argument from motion, The argument from efficient cause, the argument from Necessary being, the argument from gradation, and God the designer.
Abraham
Originally named Abram; God asked him to travel to Canaan and sacrifice his son Isaac as a test of faith, making a covenant that he would be the father of a great nation.
Isaac
The son promised to Abraham and Sarah who continued the covenant; he was the father of twin sons named Jacob and Esau.
Jacob / Israel
Son of Isaac who wrestled with God and received a new name; he was the father of twelve sons who became the twelve tribes of Israel.
Joseph
Jacob's favorite son who was sold into slavery by his brothers; he became a leader in Egypt by interpreting dreams and saving the land from famine.
Parable
A vivid story to convey a religious truth, at times with a surprising ending.
Riddle
A question or a statement that teases the mind.
Etiology
A story that gives cause of something.
Fable
A brief story with an overarching moral theme.
Pronouncement Story
A passage whose purpose is to set up an important saying.
Allegory
An extended comparison where many elements of a story stand for deeper realities like abstract ideas, moral qualities, or spiritual realities.
Creed
A formal statement or religious beliefs.
Hyperbole
An exaggerated saying in order to highlight the topic.
Conscience
Helps a person decide the goodness or sinfulness of an action or attitude.
Divine revelation
The way God communicates knowledge of Godself to human kind.
Passover
The 10th plague sent to Egypt involving the death of the first born; Israelites protected themselves by putting lamb's blood on their door posts so the plague would pass over.
The Flood
A 40 day and 40 night event where God wiped evil from the earth, saving only the righteous Noah and animals on an ark, which eventually rested on Mount Ararat.
Creation Accounts (The 7 Days)
Saul
The first king of Israel chosen to lead the tribes, whose reign ended in conflict and failure.
David
Famous king who defeated Goliath, united Israel into one strong kingdom, and made Jerusalem the capital.
Solomon
Son of David known for wisdom and riches; he built the First Temple in Jerusalem before the kingdom split after his death.
Covenant
An agreement between two people or a group; in the Bible, it is usually with God.
Prophets
People chosen by God, according to the Bible, to deliver His messages to others.
Garden of Eden
The home of Adam and Eve where they were permitted to eat from any tree except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Sacrifice
The act of giving up something valuable as an offering to God, such as Abraham with Isaac.
The Holy Land
The land promised by God to the Israelites through a covenant with Abraham.
The Plagues
A series of ten disasters sent upon Egypt by God through Moses to persuade Pharaoh to free the Israelites from slavery.
Moses
Leader chosen at the burning bush who led the Israelites through the Red Sea, received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, and guided the people toward the Promised Land.
